Collection of Leadership Thoughts

Leadership

A true leader should always reflect on their tenure by asking, “After moving on from my position, did I leave it and those who looked up to me better, worse, or unchanged?”

Reflection

This is an excellent question for self-evaluation, allowing leaders to honestly and objectively assess their progress. I learned the value of this practice while leading a team of analysts at the National Security Agency. Each quarter, I would ask myself this question and compare my current answer to previous quarters and to the productivity results of the previous leadership. This reflective approach helped me continually improve my leadership skills and effectiveness.

The Real Air Force

Early in my Air Force career, my very first commander enlightened us about the so-called “real Air Force.” She remarked, “Throughout my long career, I’ve heard people mention this ‘real Air Force,’ saying ‘this is not the real Air Force.’ Well, let me tell you, if anyone finds or knows someone who knows about the ‘real Air Force,’ please let me know, because after twenty years, I still haven’t found it.”

As an intelligence analyst in the United States Air Force, I often encounter discussions about the so-called ‘greater Air Force’ or ‘real Air Force,’ particularly in relation to the intelligence and cyber domains. When these topics arise, I remind myself of these key principles to stay grounded. I also strive to enlighten those who perpetuate this narrative, emphasizing the integral role of intelligence and cyber operations in the overall mission of the Air Force.

Crucial Leadership Amid Growing National Security Threats

Leadership is crucial right now due to the increasing challenges and threats posed by adversaries. During my time in the United States Air Force as an intelligence analyst, I have seen firsthand how U.S. adversaries are striving to compete with and undermine our nation, often with nefarious intentions. They are exploiting the opportunities presented by the digital and information age, as well as the very core principles that make the United States of America the best and greatest nation, such as freedom and democratic values.

Effective leadership is essential to navigating these complex threats, safeguarding our national security, and upholding the values that define our nation. Strong leaders can unite and inspire, fostering resilience and adaptability in the face of ever-evolving challenges. Now, more than ever, we need leaders who can strategically address these issues, protect our interests, and ensure the continued prosperity and security of our country. At the same time, they must uphold Americans’ rights to freedom, privacy, the pursuit of happiness, and justice for all.
